There are several learning disabilitys that are widespread..mostly Dyslexia, ADHD, and SEVEAR short and long term memory problems. These problems were not understood untill about 10 years ago. I have 3 children, all graduated high school. My youngest, from a regular high school with a 3.9 GPA. She was the captian of her HS cheer team, in advanced dance, employed, volunteered coaching kids 20 hours a week, and basicly the most admired, mature teen in our community. Some of her regular teachers noticed she had sevear memory problems with details in the 9th grad. There was no doubt that lack of effort was not her problem, because it was just memory, At 20 she’s now a waitress, a volunteer youth cheer coach, teaches dance classes through the parks and rec department, and the mother of a infant. She is happy. When she turns 22, the high school will hire her as their cheer coach. It is clear she loves to teach, and is gifted at it. Many people who notice this, deside to lecture her about going to college. If “school is not her thing” isn’t enough, and she elaberates that she struggles in some areas. They respond that if she just tryed/wanted to she could do it. If she’s brave enough to state that she dosnt want to, they question her on how will she ever be able to pay for her childs’ upbringing and provide him with benifits. Some have the nerve to say that if she didn’t have the baby, she could have had a real life with a future.
I have witnessed this at least 6 times. What are peoples problem?? A reasonable estimate for her is about 11 years, because we don’t believe in being unemployed, and tutoring through her memory problem is long. We have noticed that on the job training, or an education that is mainly only the details needed for our profession, is better suited for us. I have the same problem and spent 4 years working on a AA degree. All A’s but could never pass the algebra or forien langage so I have nothing. My classmates would talk about wanting the degree so they could go out and make $12 an hour. I already make $20 as a Hospital Admitting Rep. Know why? Because I got the job right out of high school, and stayed for 25 years. Thank god I didn’t spin my wheels in college early on.I coach kids, take vacations, have hobbies, I love my life. I wounder how much my daughter would love her life being reminded that she’s mildly retarded everyday at school?
