On the one hand, if you have already been diagnosed with a mental disorder by a qualified professional, it’s handy to be able to get a prescription from a GP you already know and trust. However, I can’t help but think that GPs usually specialize in physical ailments rather than psychological ones, so I wonder how often GPs prescribe the wrong psychiatric medication to their patients.

Cañu fynd d’eye-run-e asked: I started taking Concerta three days ago, and already I’m seeing results…and side effects. My doctor told me to take 18mg the first 2 days, and 36 mg from the third day on. So today I took 36mg. The first 2 days I had no results, and no side effects. Today in the morning–still no results. But in the afternoon I was able to focus perfectly. I think this may be because I had gym class (I’m a 13-year-old girl) in between. Anyway, here are the side effects I experienced and when:
1. Headache (morning)
2. No appetite whatsoever (throughout day) I’ve been counting every calorie I ate and it adds up to 640…is that enough?
3. Runny nose (afternoon)
4. Dry throat (morning)
5. I’m usually a shy person, but today I felt outgoing, and I wanted to be the center of attention. I also felt more aggressive than usual. (throughout day)
Should I tell my doctor about any of these? Are these normal? Should I stop taking Concerta? And also, should I be worrying?

erin asked: when people have adha they are prescribed adderall or ritalin. these medications will act as a speed for those who do not suffer from adhd but they seem to balance a person who has attention deficit hyper active disorder. my question then is what happens to a person with ahdh when they take something like xanax or ativan?? what about ssri’s such as zoloft or lexapro? just curious…..

Ben asked: I am taking Ritalin and it seems to work OK but not great. Also, the side effects (appetite loss, insomnia, headache) can be a real pain in the you-know-what. I was wondering if Adderall works better than Ritalin and if its side effects are less or more harsh.
And please, I want answers from people who have actually taken one or both of these medications. Also, I am not interested in herbal remedies and I don’t want to hear about the “evil drug companies” and their “deadly medicines.” No offense, I love you guys, but seriously! Thanks

Journey-ing my way through life! asked: I am 35 years old & had a life changing moment last week talking with the psychiatrist. Went over every psych test they have & I fit ADHD 100% back to elementary school through now 30’s. I have been being treated for anxiety with no relief 15 years.
Doctor started me on 35 mg of Vyvanse. Felt the best I have felt since I can remember for 4 days & then it started wearing off, I got anxious & tired. Yesterday & today I have took the full dose of 70 mg & I get a horrible headache and got on edge and VERY irritable and fidgety & feel hot around 4 pm. take medicine @ 7 am.
I came home last night and took 2 mg of Xanax and 1 Ambien and still couldn’t go to sleep until 1 am. I felt better as far as the anxiousness & the irritability but I woke up today in a total fog & in a horrible mood. I took the Vyvanse again this morning. Today, same symptoms around 4 & I took 1 Xanax today & 1/2 ambien when I got home & 30 mins later calm, not irritable, still not sleeping. What’s up?
