If the Noncustodial Parent is not giving our child ADHD medication on the weekend. What can I do about it?

RonAlv2 asked:

My child is having difficulty during the beginning of the week, because his mother forgets to give him his medication on the weekend. She says that she forgets and he doesn’t remind her. He’s 8 y/o and I don’t think that that should be his responsibility.

How do single parents and married parents cope with ADHD kids?

Posted by admin on March 18, 2009

Sweet Pea asked:

I am a single parent with a six year-old daughter with ADHD. I am a widow so we are by ourselves. At times it is just so overwhelming. She is on medication but sometimes when she has days she is not on it or when the medication wears off at night it gets so overwhelming because she is so wound up it takes her a while to calm down. How do other parents cope with this? I could use some insight.

as add/ adhd becomes so prevalent?

desmeran asked:

… with as many as 1 in 10 boys taking adhd medication in a study in one North Carolina county, is the problem really the kids’ attention or our expectations about how much attention kids should really be able to have at particular ages? kids nowadays do more “academic” work for longer times at younger and younger ages, have longer school days with more scheduled, adult-directed activities, and have less recess, gym, and unstructured time. if those expectations had been placed on earlier generations, wouldn’t we all have come up short and been diagnosed with adhd, too? in our rush to fill kids up with knowledge and skills earlier and earlier, are we setting them up for failure and even for medical diagnoses and medications?

[I should add that I do realize there is a set of kids who would have attention problems with virtually any set of reasonable expections on them, and I also realize there are kids who truly need and deserve help (and, in some cases, medication) for those problems. I'm not questioning the existence of adhd or wondering about the kids on the extreme end of the spectrum, but about the rest of them -- those kids with more borderline attention issues who are diagnosed with adhd so frequently.]

Do you have children with ADHD on meds?

Posted by admin on February 12, 2009

jcox asked:

My son has been diagnosed with Bipolar and Mood Disorder since he was three. Now he is six years old and in kindergarten. He recently had a neuropsych eval which concluded his diagnoses to be ADHD, Cognitive Disorder with Executive Functions weakness as the main diagnoses and R/O bipolar, R/O ODD, R/O Reactive Attachment Disorder. (R/O = Rule Out).

At his appointment next week I believe that his psych nurse practitioner is going to try him on some ADHD medications to see if he has any improvement on them. Currently he has severe behavior issues, aggression, hyperness, and rages to name a few. Currently he is on Risperdal, Clonidine, and Celexa. When he was three and suspected to maybe have ADHD they tried him on Ritalin which made him rage awefully flailing his body uncontrollably for about four hours. I am hoping nothing like that happens again. I am wondering if anybody has children with these mixed diagnoses whom took ADHD meds? Did they work well? What side effects did your children have?

What are the biggest issues faced by parents of ADHD children?

DLyonsParentCoach asked:

I am a personal coach specializing in parenting. Because I am also a mother of an ADHD child, I have decided to focus mainly in that area. I desire to help others in this situation, but I want to focus my attention on the main issues faced by parents in this situation and not just rely on my own personal experiences. Each child is different and family values vary…I want to know what others are experiencing.

butterfly asked:

I have been nannying two children for about a monthand a half both children show no respect. They are rude, disobedient, careless, and have very fowl mouths, the boy especially. I have known the mother all my life and she use to be such a different parent, then she changed drastically. I am a very strict parent. I teach my children manners, respect, and use christian disciplines. The mother of above children does nothing. I please need suggestions. I have gotten to the point that I may have to let this job go if the children and mother don’t change. Thank You for your suggestions.

What advice would anyone have for a stepmother of 2 boys with ADHD, what tools have you found to work?

saintlyinnocents asked:

I have a 7 and 6 yr old who both were diagnosed with ADHD. My 1 yr old is showing no signs of it, but does imitate their behavior of course. Medication helps the 6 yr old, but the 7 yr old has not done well with medication and is no longer on it. Dealing with them each day and fighting over the same basic things that we were told would be good for them to do, (cleaning room, getting dressed, brushing teeth) always results in arguments. What works to get them to do these simple tasks without arguments, or dramatic screeches and groans?
I need to add that I would never put a 1 year old who does not show signs of any problem whatsoever on any type of medication. It is a necessity to prevent my 6 year old from harming both himself and other people as he was throwing desks and chairs at people and windows while in school. I have sat and argued with doctors about the dosage, etc to prevent either one of them from being overdosed or being placed on something that is not helping them. I removed my 7 yr old from all medication because 1)it had no effect and 2)made him ill and I refuse to allow him to be on any other types of medication. There is a possibility that the 6 yr old is also bi-polar and in that case will obviously need the help he can recieve. In extreme cases medication is a necessity simply to help a child function on a day to day basis. Their behavior is NOT normal, and therefore cannot be dealt with in a normal way. There are however simple ways of diverting them into these every day activities. Advice?

If the packet says no artificial colours and flavours, does that mean it is OK?
