How do I coach a child with ADHD?
Posted by admin on February 26, 2009
I found out today that a child on my girls 12 & under softball team has ADHD. This came as a shock to me. I recruited this child for our travel league because I had seen her play. She is the youngest player on the team, has amazing fielding skills, and is tough.
I was shocked that in practice she doesn’t pay attention, and acts childish. I tried to work with her. She sinks into a shell and won’t participate with the team in practice or game time warm ups. So I ignore her when she acts like that.
Instead of playing her as a backup 2nd baseman, I just platoon her at right field and bat her at the bottom of the order.
Her mother, has been very adamant about her child batting last and not starting; which causes problems because my child starts at 2nd & bats 2nd.
I was shocked when her mother told me that she was “special” and cries because she bats last & doesn’t start.
How do I coach this child to get better while not showing favoritism?
