Question for Christian parents?

Posted by admin on January 31, 2009

Lady Lazarus asked:

Do you spank your kids? Most of the Christians I know believe fully in spanking. Sometimes their kids are still bratty, but then they attribute that to “ADHD”, so as not to admit the spanking tactic failed. Others have little robots who behave as children, but turn into secret drug users, get pregnant or have eating disorders as teens. From what I understand that is a mechanism to regain control over their own bodies (in albeit a negative way).

My parents were Christians who did not spank. I (an atheist) don’t spank my kids. True my brother turned out gay (which was because my parents spoiled the rod! ), but none of us had any major behavior issues.

My 3.5-year-old is the most well behaved, free-spirited kid I’ve met. He converses with adults without fear. He shows empathy and maturity beyond his years, but I have *never* spanked him. Granted, he has spent his fair share of time in the time out chair, but overall, he’s very polite without being timid.

So, Christians who spank, how is it that an atheist who doesn’t spank is managing to raise a boy who is so well-behaved? What is your rationale for spanking?
