Adult ADD diagnosis & treatment?

Posted by admin on December 11, 2008

lindsay615 asked:

I’ve struggled with symptoms of ADD (not ADHD) from childhood to now (I’m over 40) but my intelligence and creativity have helped me to compensate and function. I struggle with work and parenting and want to finally face and address my problem. But I’ve heard that getting doctors to recognize and treat adult ADD is difficult if you are not completely floundering in your life. I’ve brought up my symptoms to my doctor before but she always says it is stress and life and prescribes antidepressants. Though the RX helps with my tiredness it doesn’t address my focus, craving for novelty, disorganization and procrastination.

Can anyone give me direction in identifying doctors that would be receptive to treating my problems? Should I go to a psychiatrist or family doctor? Why would a doctor not want to treat this condition?

I am supposed to fast for a blood test. Can I still take my daily medications, especially hrt?

The test is at 4 and the fast is to be for 14 hours. I take meds for ADHD and for hrt. It could be a very rough day on myself as well as coworkers if I do not have that medication. Can I take it?

Journey-ing my way through life! asked:

I am 35 years old & had a life changing moment last week talking with the psychiatrist. Went over every psych test they have & I fit ADHD 100% back to elementary school through now 30’s. I have been being treated for anxiety with no relief 15 years.

Doctor started me on 35 mg of Vyvanse. Felt the best I have felt since I can remember for 4 days & then it started wearing off, I got anxious & tired. Yesterday & today I have took the full dose of 70 mg & I get a horrible headache and got on edge and VERY irritable and fidgety & feel hot around 4 pm. take medicine @ 7 am.

I came home last night and took 2 mg of Xanax and 1 Ambien and still couldn’t go to sleep until 1 am. I felt better as far as the anxiousness & the irritability but I woke up today in a total fog & in a horrible mood. I took the Vyvanse again this morning. Today, same symptoms around 4 & I took 1 Xanax today & 1/2 ambien when I got home & 30 mins later calm, not irritable, still not sleeping. What’s up?

I have been having a rough year. New Years’ Day I went to the ER and was told I had an acute appendicitis and needed surgery. I had a reaction to the succincholine and spent 12hrs. on a respirator in ICU. I was told I could not metabolize it and it had to wear off. After all the meds wear off I was still hurting, but with a dull pain in my URQ. After months of pain and it getting worse by the week, I had a MRI, blood work, an ultrasound an endoscopy, the nuclear test, and a colonoscopy all came back normal. The surgeon who done my appendectomy said that with my symptoms it sounded like my gallbladder even though all test showed normal. The surgeon and I decided on surgery in May. That surgery went well every thing was okay (gallbladder had scar tissue all over it from my kids using it as a football when I was preg.) and no more pain except the pain on my ULQ which only comes when it is time for my period (did not have until after Jan.). Also after Jan. my period went from messed up (I am anemic and have high blood pressure) to a major mess. I started having it four 14 days with palm size clots. Being anemic (iron anemia) I know about being tired, but I have been very tired to the point were I can get wore out talking, get hoarse, have trouble breathing, and heart palpitations; they go away with rest. To help with my period my Doc. put me on birth control pills for three months in June which helped part of it. I do not have the heart palpitations as much as before but I still get fatigued easy, my period last for 6 to 11 days, I can not exercise because I get cramps all over and stay fatigued for a couple of days afterward. And 3 weeks after I was put on birth control my ribcage on my right side started sticking out. When I lay down I can put my left hand on my left side and go across and touch the bottom part of my ribs on the right side. I also have pain and pressure under my ribs. I have been given 2 blood work ups and a CT scan all normal. I have been treated for acid reflux and muscle inflammation with no results. Last yr. I could do 400 crunches, 60 mens pu’s, curl 25 pounds 80 times, swim a 1/2 mi. and out walk a teen with ADHD who did not take his meds for over a week. I am on a low fat and low sodium (I do not like salt) diet, also I do not eat a lot of sugar. Any ideas.

More frequent periods, emotional changes in 35 year old = perimenopause?

Posted by admin on October 2, 2008

scary shari asked:

I’m 35 years old. In my teen years, all thru my 20s and into my 30s, I got my period every 34-38 days, approx. I know that’s MUCH longer than “average”, but it was normal for me because it was very consistent. (I don’t use birth control pills).

However, in the last year or so, I’ve noticed I’m now getting my periods every 30-34 days, approximately. There are some a bit longer, but overall I’ve definitely sensed a “shortening” in my cycle. Does this sound more like a change that occurs “just because,” or a change signalling perimenopause? Don’t worry: if anything extreme or unsettling starts happening, I’ll of course see my ob/gyn.

Also, I’ve clearly sensed in the last year or so that my ADHD, forgetfulness, anxiety and insomnia issues (which I’ve always had to a mild degree) have gotten worse. My psychiatrist even thinks I have a bit of depression now as well! I’ve heard that ALL of the above can also be symptoms of the hormonal changes of perimenopause.

Your thoughts? Thanks! :) OOPS! Sorry, I forgot to explain perimenopause, although if you’re answering this question you probably already know. :) Anyhoo, per the Mayo Clinic website, perimenopause…

“…marks the interval in which your body begins its transition into menopause. Perimenopause encompasses the years leading up to menopause — anywhere from two to eight years… The levels of your reproductive hormones — estrogen and progesterone — rise and fall unevenly during perimenopause. Your menstrual cycles may lengthen or shorten, and you begin having menstrual cycles in which you don’t ovulate.”
