How to deal with an adhd child in the classroom?

Posted by admin on December 8, 2008

jennifer c asked:

Okay, this isn’t a question, but more of an answer, but any1 with experience is highly encouraged 2 give advice. My son has adhd and it was very difficult 4 him in the classroom, as well as the teachers and other children. When he was younger, the teachers would make up special rewards 4 him. I thought this would make the other kids mad, but, because they were as aggrivated as the teacher with his disruption, they actually encouraged it. He was allowed so many times 2 speak up without raising his hand. After he did it once, the teacher would move his marker & show he had 4 times left and so on. This made him more aware of his behavior. Same thing with getting out of his seat. After his marks were moved & he repeated the behavior, he got write-offs 2 do at home. I think it was like 10 per extramark, may have been less. Anyone who knows these children know that they hate homework. I was a supportive parent, but if you have 1 that isn’t, they can do these at freetime.
Medications aren’t given until they reach kindergarden, and even with medications there are still behavior problems. As a matter of fact, concerta was the best medication that was prescribed to my son and even that didn’t help a whole lot.

How can you help an ADHD child want to learn?

Posted by admin on December 3, 2008

Jellybean asked:

My 12 year old son is ADHD. At one point in time, ffom K thru 3rd grade he was a straight A student and he loved to learn. Doing his homework was never a problem for him. He loved to experiment with all kinds of subjects. Then when he got to the 4th grade he got a teacher that stereotyped him as bad because of his ADHD. She sent him to the principle for even the littlest thing ex. bending down to pick up a pencil he dropped on the floor so he could finish his classwork. When he tried to explain to her what he was doing she said he was defiant ans argumentitive b/c he should have went without trying to explain what happened. That year he was sent home at least once a week for teacher accused dissrupting, being defiant and argumentitive. Since this year he has given up trying in school. His grades are poor and he has developed a “don’t care” attitude about school. He has been seen a therapist for 2 years to try and help him. It has helped some but not as much as I would like.
I want to help him get excited about learning again, and to remember how much fun it can be. He is in his first year of Jr High now and I want him to excell. If anyone has any suggestions on ways I can try to get him back interested and excited about school i would live to hear them.

Public schooling, ADD, ADHD, perscription drugs, and a suffering generation?

Posted by admin on November 30, 2008

Wrathe asked:

I have clinically diagnosed ADD. As a kid, whilst in elementary/high school, I was always being pressured by teachers and so called guidance counselors to go on prescription drugs such as Aderall and Ritalin. For my own personal reasons, I’ve always been vehemently opposed to using these drugs as a means to “straighten out” my personality, and succeeded in refusing treatment despite being constantly at odds with my schools’ trigger-happy psychologists.

I graduated high school with a 3.8 GPA and was one of 4 other males out of my class (small class of 120 people) who managed to attend a 4 year university directly after graduating. After a 5 year stint, I’m now scheduled to graduate with a bachelor’s degree and a minor this spring… my friend and fellow ADD diagnose-ee wasn’t so lucky. He killed himself during a particularly low bout of depression. He was a prescription user.

My question is: what are the life chances for the rest of the Ritalin generation? Was it really worth it?
